On October 2, 2022, the Tampa PD and their helicopter were involved in a chase that escalated into a failed escape by sea and garnered a lot of attention on Facebook. According to the Tampa PD, the suspect—Dewayne Dean (32)—robbed a woman at a hotel on N. Westshore Boulevard in the morning.
He was spotted as he fled to Cypress Pointe Beach where police closed in on him. Dean then took to the water and swam 200 feet out.

This way just wasn’t going to work. Either the police were going to get the boats or break out the helicopter. After all, the police were also dealing with hurricane relief in addition to keeping the order—who has time for a sea chase?
Sure enough, the helicopter came out and the suspect gave up and was arrested. Dewayne Dean currently faces charges for robbery by sudden snatching and resisting an officer without violence.
He also had a number of other warrants for battery, coke possession, grand theft, fleeing officers at high speeds, and battery against a pregnant woman.
Dean had the reasons to flee but an escape just wasn’t in the cards for him.
