In these drug seizures and busts, the action from CBP in the territories is often underreported. In late October 2022, Customs seized roughly 2,626 pounds of coke—or 49 bales at 1,200 kilos—heading into Puerto Rico. The estimated street value of the product was $26.4 million.

On October 26, 2022, the Air and Marine Operations division of the U.S Customs and Border Protection agency spotted a yola-type boat heading towards Vieques Island. A “yola” is basically a yawl or a sailboat that can operate with a small crew compared to larger vessels. This boat was manned by a crew of two and had two engines.
The AMO contacted a Coastal Interceptor in the area of Fajardo, Puerto Rico to investigate. It was reported back that 40 bales of a white powder were onboard. Testing would reveal it to be cocaine—and there was a lot of it.
Both the two smugglers and the drugs were forwarded to the DEA and FBI for processing and prosecution. AMO Director of the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch, Augusto Reyes said of the seizure:
“Smuggling attempts into Puerto Rico come from many areas throughout the island. AMO agents are committed to use all our capabilities to interdict them throughout our coastal areas.”
