Two cold cases from 1982 saw some measure of closure as there has been an arrest in the deaths of Barbara Oberholtzer and Annette Schnee in Colorado. The accused is Alan Phillips (71) and he was unable to outrun DNA and advances in forensic science.
DNA Links 71-Year-Old Man to 2 Cold Cases from 1982 in Colorado – Sentenced to Life in Prison
On January 6, 1982, Oberholtzer was last seen hitchhiking close to Breckenridge, Colorado. Her body was found on January 7 11 miles away on Hoosier Pass. Also seen hiking in the area was Schnee whose body wasn’t found until July 1982 in a Park County creek. In both cases, the women were shot.
Alan Phillips turned up as a suspect in 2020 thanks to DNA as his blood matched blood found on Oberholtzer’s glove when her body was discovered. The following year, arrest warrants were issued for the retired mechanic and he was arrested on a traffic stop on February 24, 2021.
September 15, 2022, saw Phillips convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and kidnapping. On November 7, he was sentenced to two life sentences.
Question for the readers out there: Do you believe Alan Phillips had more victims than the two young women at a ski resort or were they purely opportunity murders? Basically, was he watching these women for a while and figured he could kill both in the same day or did he kill them because he had the perhaps chance to do so and there was no building urge?
