In Portland, Oregon, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office turned down prosecuting a man who killed his former landlord with a sword. While that might seem head-scratching, this case had some ongoing animosity between the two and a strange ending for the landlord.
Man Who Killed His Former Landlord with a Sword Will Not Be Prosecuted In Oregon – Killing Deemed Self Defense
Landlord Justin Valdivia (46) reportedly had something of a feud with the unnamed former tenant. Before September 15, 2022 incident, Valdivia is said to have threatened his former tenant and others with a knife twice and attempted to break into the rental home while drunk on one occasion.
One tenant left the home because of Justin Valdivia “escalating behavior,” according to prosecutors. The tenant who would kill Valdivia managed to record his interactions with Valdivia
Things came to a head on September 15 when Valdivia attacked the tenant with a hammer and a pellet gun that was painted to look like a real firearm. He also wore the mask of Michael Myers from the Halloween film franchise and a blue jumpsuit.
On that day, Valdivia entered the tenant’s apartment and triggered a makeshift alarm set up by the tenant. This alarm involved a painting seated on top of a box and propped against the back door.
Valdivia stayed in a recently-built house on the back lot of the rental. When someone came in through the back door, the painting would fall making a loud noise and alerting the tenants.
The landlord’s uninvited entry surprised the tenant who was busy watching YouTube. When he spotted Valdivia, he saw the hammer and pellet gun and went to grab his sword which was described as “sabre-like”.
A fight ensued and ended with Valdivia being stabbed with the sword. While another resident tried to save the landlord, paramedics pronounced the landlord dead on the scene.
