Earlier this year, owner of All Elite Wrestling Tony Khan had a big announcement. He had purchased the rights to long standing promotion Ring of Honor, and would be now in charge of the future of the company. This has led to two of the biggest PPV events in ROH history – with Supercard of Honor & Death Before Dishonor being massive by ROH standards. However, Death Before Dishonor might be the final ROH event without AEW being added to the title.
AEW: Ring Of Honor Is The New Name Of The Brand
Right now, we’re on the road to the final ROH PPV of the year with Final Battle coming in December. However, fans would notice that with the tickets being sold – it’s listed as AEW: Ring Of Honor Presents Final Battle. This is new, as this was not the case with Death Before Dishonor, and was a quiet change that was made.
This is a choice that makes sense. Right now, AEW is the much bigger brand than ROH – and Tony Khan has plans to get a TV deal for ROH in 2023. Shopping it around as another AEW weekly show is a much easier sale, with AEW getting strong ratings on Wednesday and Friday nights already.
Fans Hope To TV Announcement At Final Battle
It’s clear Khan is using AEW to help rebuild the name of ROH, with the current reign of Chris Jericho as ROH World Champion bringing in names from the company’s past for big TV matches. Fans hope to hear an announcement about the future of the brand at Final Battle, and Khan has noted that the performance of ROH will be reviewed as 2022 comes to an end.
If Khan is unable to get a TV deal by mid-2023, it’s likely that ROH will be either dropped as an idea on AEW TV, or a show building to PPV’s would be relegated to YouTube alongside AEW Dark. At worst, owning Ring of Honor means Khan has the twenty years of tape in the company to use, which could help flesh out a potential AEW streaming service.
