In Cape Town, the Hawks—which handles organized crime within the South African Police Services—have busted up a drug smuggling operation between Brazil and South Africa. Eight men Involved with the operation handed themselves over early on November 2, 2022.
South African Authorities Arrest 8 Involved In South Africa to Brazil Coke Smuggling Operation
The arrested Include David Bannister (52), Allister Jackson (33), Marinus van Nielsen (31), Jacobus Slabbert (41), Mario Joseph (44), John Rodman (47), Andre Welgemoed (44), and Anthony Tarr.
Seven of those arrested agreed through their shared legal counsel Reuben Lidell that they would be detained and agreed to appear In court on November 8, 2022.
The expanse of these South Africa-Brazil drug operations was unearthed In June 2021, after smuggler Noel Pieter van Zyl was riding through Pretoria with R400 million (over $22 million) in pure cocaine before being arrested.
He had 805 kg of coke with him loaded inside of a ski boat hitched to a truck.
The capture of van Zyl had a snowball effect within Pretoria and surrounding areas as several cartels were either broken up or had taken damage. The eight who surrendered on November 2 were simply the latest arrests for the Hawks and its international partners.
