In Austin, Texas a man was arrested for shoplifting and stabbing a Bastrop County deputy several times. The incident occurred at a H-E-B grocery store on November 12, 2022 when the Jaime Eliseo Canales (40) was stopped by employees for shoplifting.

According to the Austin PD, Canales returned the stolen items and requested the police. It was then that the Bastrop County deputy arrived for his usual shift at the Riverside Drive H-E-B and Canales began stabbing him. He was arrested by the Austin PD and confessed to stabbing the deputy.
The victim would receive surgery for his injuries including a stab wound to the neck. In the Austin PD statement on the incident, Canales showed no remorse for stabbing the deputy. He was charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
It was noted that Jaime Canales has previous arrests for shoplifting, robbery, and assault. He has also been charged with threatening and attacking his mother. He is jailed in the Travis County Jail on $100,000 bond.
