If there is any name in professional wrestling that deserves to be remembered for his contributions, it’s Vince McMahon.
He was a pioneer that turned a territory, local based sport into a global phenomenon through his vision of what it could be.
Is Vince McMahon no Longer Relevant?
His vision included putting out the best production values possible and sending the tapes of his shows across the country. Seeing the difference in quality, stations started showing WWE shows over the others they broadcast for years and the war to erase the territory system was under way.
The added television revenue allowed him to hire the top wrestlers from the other territories and effectively strangle them into submission since without their stars they couldn’t maintain their fanbase.
Gamble after gamble seemed to work out for Vince as WrestleMania became a huge hit, and the WWE continued to grow.
Exit and fall from grace
But earlier in 2022, McMahon faced allegations of sexual assault and during an investigation by the WWE board started turning up millions used as hush money for various affairs, he resigned from the company while remaining the majority shareholder.
It was a fall from grace of a man many consider a genius in the sports entertainment world. But in recent years he seemed to be missing something. He couldn’t see a wrestler’s potential as clearly as he used to, and WWE shows became nearly unwatchable at times with the lack of consistency and matches thrown together at the last minute.
With recent news that McMahon is facing another sexual assault accusation and he reportedly told others he would be returning to the WWE, it brings back a recent discussion Dave Meltzer had on Wrestling Observer Radio.
He claimed that McMahon became irrelevant as soon as he resigned and the WWE transitioned smoothly after he left. Special thanks to ringsidenews for the transcript.
“Vince McMahon became irrelevant really fast in the real world. If you really notice. Like, when Vince was gone, the first couple of days or week, it’s a big story, but after that, it’s like — he was a giant in wrestling, but in pop culture he was a one-day story. So, I know it from dealing with some high-power people that they lost interest in Vince real quick, you know once it was like ‘okay he’s gone, now onto the next’ life goes on, yes. Like, if he would have left and WWE collapsed, then yes, but WWE just — very smooth transition, actually got better…”
To be honest, we noticed a severe drop in McMahon news a week or so after he resigned, so it’s possible Meltzer’s correct on this.
It could also be part of the reason McMahon has reportedly stated he wants to return to the WWE.
