New York Bishop Lamor Whitehead Indicted for Extortion and Fraud – Also Lied to the FBI
On December 26, Whitehead was arrested and the crimes he’s been accused of are of the greed persuasion. When threats didn’t work, prosecutors said that he lied about where the money is going and promised that victims would see financial benefits from doing so. The list of offenses from the Department of Justice starts with:
“First, WHITEHEAD induced one of his parishioners to invest approximately $90,000 of her retirement savings with him but instead spent the investment on luxury goods and other personal purposes.”
Whitehead is also alleged to have shook a businessman down for $5,000 then turned around and asked him for $500,000 loan.
On top of this incident, he also lied to the businessman and said he would get a piece of property transactions—which weren’t in Whitehead’s power to do—if he could make things happen with the city government.
On the note of lying to the FBI, it was during a search warrant when Whitehead claimed to only have one cellphone only for the feds to find the second one.
Lamor Whitehead was charged with two counts of wire fraud, extortion, and making material false statements. All charges but the last carry a maximum of 20 years while the last charge has a maximum five-year sentence in prison.
