Prince Harry expressed his support for his mother’s transparency about life in the royal family while reflecting on the late Princess Diana’s infamous Panorama interview.
“She was forced to discuss it” Harry, 38, elaborated in the first episode of his Netflix documentary series with Meghan Markle, which debuted streaming on Thursday, December 8. “Especially in that Panorama interview,” Harry said. “I think we all now know that she was deceived into giving the interview, but at the same time, she spoke the truth of her experience.”

The Duke of Sussex discussed how it affected him to see his mother live her life in the spotlight. “My mum was harassed throughout her life with my dad [King Charles III], but after they separated, the harassment went to new levels,” he outlined. “I saw and had experienced. I learned things. The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution.
I remember thinking, ‘How can I ever find someone who is willing and capable to withstand all the baggage that comes with being with me?'” Harry claims that he still has some memory gaps from his time spent with Princess Diana before her passing. “My childhood, I remember, was filled with laughter, filled with happiness, and filled with adventure,” he continued.
“I don’t have many early memories of my mum. It was almost like, internally, I sort of blocked them out.” He also said: “But I always remember her laugh, her cheeky laugh. Her always saying to me, ‘You can get in trouble, just don’t get caught,’ and I’ll always be that cheeky person inside.”
More than 20 years after it was initially broadcast, the CIO of BetterUp offers his perspective on Diana’s controversial BBC interview from 1995. The late princess made headlines at the time for being open about her struggle with bulimia and her troubled marriage to Charles, 74. (The divorce between the former couple was formalized in 1996, the year before Diana’s tragic vehicle accident.)
Diana mentioned Charles’ alleged affair with Camilla during the explosive interview, stating: “There were three of us in this marriage.” Prince William finally spoke out about the BBC’s inquiry into the strategies employed by journalist Martin Bashir to acquire the interview in November 2020. In a statement, he said, “The independent investigation is a step in the right way,” adding that he hoped the investigation would “help establish the truth” regarding the interview.
Later, William, 40, stated that he believed the video should never be seen again. (Snippets from the interview were included in the Harry & Meghan docuseries on Netflix. “It is a matter of great regret that the BBC did not get to the facts in the immediate aftermath of the program when there were warning signs that the interview might have been obtained improperly. Instead, as The Duke of Cambridge himself put it, the BBC failed to ask the tough questions.
Had we done our job properly, Princess Diana would have known the truth during her lifetime. We let her, The Royal Family, and our audiences down,” the statement from Davie read via the network’s website in July. “Now we know about the shocking way that the interview was obtained, I have decided that the BBC will never show the program again, nor will we license it in whole or part to other broadcasters.”
