One of the notable cases closing out December 2022 saw a British man and four others were handed down drug trafficking sentences by the Swansea Crown Court. A name that might sound familiar is Steven Semmens, a trafficker who was filmed snorting coke off the headstone of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar in 2018.

On the video—which came up in court—Semmens said he snorted cocaine as part of a bet. His lawyer said that his client didn’t expect things to escalate like they did and that the act did not go over we’ll with the Colombian underworld.
Semmens’s legal counsel shared that his client attempted to leave Colombia quietly and unnoticed. He even changed his appearance in hopes of sneaking through security—but still ended being kicked out by authorities.
Also mentioned was a failed attempt to smuggle cocaine into the UK. They were expecting to move kilograms of product but nothing touched ground at home. Semmens and co-conspirator Shane White were heading up that plan.
In total, the six arrested traffickers’ time adds up to over 50 years. Steven Semmens pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import cocaine–as did Shane White. He was given 13 years and six months in prison while White received 15 years and four months.
