According to the lawyer of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the crime boss isn’t doing too well in American prison and is appealing to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico for help. The conditions Guzman is living under in prison are presented by his lawyer as “psychological torment.”

El Chapo’s lawyer claims that the drug lord “has not seen the sun” during his six years of incarceration. It is also claimed that Guzman gets fewer visitation privileges and calls than his fellow inmates. Guzman’s legal team plans to argue that there were violations with his extradition which would compromise his incarceration in the U.S. The Mexican president comes in by drawing attention to those violations.
Perhaps the intent is to pressure federal prosecutors using a foreign leader. The end goal exactly is unknown and the specifics of Guzman’s letter weren’t mentioned. The former crime boss’ letter landed at the Mexican embassy in Washington D.C on January 10, 2023. Of El Chapo’s chances, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard stated:
“He is serving a sentence there, he has a sentence. So, frankly I don’t see any possibilities for him, but I’m going to review it with the prosecutor’s office.”
