Before she died, Phoebe Barker was taken to a hospital where she was treated for broken bones, bruises, burns, and bleeding on her brain. According to authorities, Mrs. Barker said that her husband “got aggressive with her and beat her up against her will.” Barker’s defense maintained that Mrs. Barker died of kidney failure after falling out of bed.
Apparently, it wasn’t the strongest defense considering the condition Mrs. Barker was reported to have shown up in. Mr. Barker was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and aggravated battery. However, a jury convicted him of manslaughter. During sentencing, Anthony Barker stuck to his story and asked for leniency. Phoebe’s mother—Phoebe Conklin—called for the maximum.
Barker was sentenced to 12 years with 555 days served.
