If you’ve been following wrestling for a long time, you’ll know that Konnan—lucha libre legend and booking mind—doesn’t hold back when he dislikes something but will make attempts to mend fences if necessary.
It’s been Konnan’s thing for decades now as he’ll be in a company for years and contribute on-air and behind the scenes before being released. However, several years later, either time healed the wounds or an attempt to improve things for business’ sake was made and Konnan’s back.
Konnan Calls Tony Khan a ‘Mega Hardcore Mark’ and Says That Will Be Detrimental to AEW
This brings us to Konnan and his relationship with AEW owner Tony Khan. On his Keepin’ It 100 with co-host and fellow WCW and TNA alumnus Disco, he points out that he knows Khan is a businessman. He says that Khan is here to make money and that the 40-year-old promoter knows he has to deliver or else AEW gets booted from national cable television and his father will cut the money off, according to Konnan. He would further elaborate:
“[Khan’s] obviously trying to make money. His problem is [that] he’s a mega hardcore mark which there’s a niche for that. He probably thinks there’s more people than there actually [is] and he caters to them and nobody else. I think that’s a huge problem.” (h/t Wrestling Inc)
To be honest, everyone and their mother knows Khan is a big mark. He a promotion owner who wasn’t in the industry initially but knows his stuff from a fan perspective—similar to NWA owner Billy Corgan. Unlike Corgan, Tony Khan operates things with fan shades on.
As it goes, that proved to be problem during the Punk-Elite backstage battle, major hiring where the hired talent isn’t used fully or regularly, and other issues that even fans of the product have pointed out.
Do you agree with Konnan or is he talking out the side of his neck about Tony Khan? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
