With WWE Royal Rumble 2023 in the rearview mirror and now that we have had time to sleep on the aftermath, what did we find out? Here are a few key points to think about while reflecting on the show.
Stop Expecting Surprises in the Royal Rumble Matches
This is something that is a long time coming. While fans always like surprises, nostalgia, and fan service, it’s something that is a very slippery slope.
When fans expect surprises and don’t get it, they sour on a match or moment no matter how good it may be. Even if you give fans a surprise and it isn’t exactly the surprise that they want, you get the same result.
What is the solution to this? Don’t give fans surprises and don’t create situations that fans may expect surprises out of. That’s the point of a surprise, it happens when you don’t expect it.
While it may disappoint many wrestling fans, it is a way to protect the product and have it be what you want it to be instead of what someone else wants it to be.
I also think that stopping surprises in the Royal Rumble matches is a good thing. You have a roster full of wrestlers that are working every show throughout the year, I think that they should get the chance to work in the Rumble match also.
Lastly, these surprises have to be running out. Year after year, the wrestlers that would be the surprises get older and older. There has to be a time when these surprises run out.
Any surprise that wasn’t Stone Cold Steve Austin or The Rock would’ve fell flat. I think that I was the best choice to just forget the surprises and focus on your current roster.
Very Little NXT Involvement in The Royal Rumble Match
Talking about surprises, the biggest surprise of the night for me was that there was no NXT men in the men’s Royal Rumble match.
Even though this isn’t the biggest deal, I think that there could’ve been one or two NXT guys in the match. I think that they could’ve easily replaced The New Day or The Street Profits with two NXT talents.
I think that the reason that they did not do this was because most of the wrestlers that they plan to call up, they have big plans for them and their debuts.
If you look at the women’s Royal Rumble match, they have four or five women from NXT and none of them did anything. Aside from Zoey Stark, all of the other women were basically warm bodies. Even Zoey didn’t do much better.
If that was all that the men from NXT were going to do in the match, then why would they even be in the match. Instead of sending them out there for fans to see them getting thrown out as their first impression on the fans, let it be something that is one on one to introduce them.
I don’t believe that this means that there will never be any NXT guys (or gals) in the Royal Rumble matches moving forward, it just means we shouldn’t EXPECT there to be NXT wrestlers in the Royal Rumble.
