There are a few tag teams right now that are among the best in the world. The likes of The Usos, FTR, and Bishamon get a lot of attention – but Aussie Open might be the best of all by the time all is said and done. Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher are the perfect combination of power, speed and skill, making them a perfect addition to any roster.
While they started 2023 as part of New Japan Pro Wrestling – they are now signed to All Elite Wrestling, because AEW was ready to give them a stable contract.
Aussie Open Needed Stability, And NJPW Wasn’t Offering This
While speaking on AEW Unrestricted, Kyle Fletcher would detail what drove Aussie Open to sign contracts with AEW despite recent success in NJPW. Fletcher had the following to say.
We were pretty happy in Japan, but not to say too much, we wanted a contract. We wanted stability. We had been independent wrestlers for…I’ve been wrestling ten years, Davis has been wrestling longer than that, we’ve been independent wrestlers for that whole time. We’ve never had stability and that’s what we wanted. We told New Japan this and it was very much a ‘yes, but not now’ type thing.
Fletcher would go on to detail that while he loves performing in Japan, the backstage environment and welcoming nature of Tony Khan made AEW a very natural choice. Right now, Aussie Open are on standby – due to an injury to Mark Davis. Fletcher was seen on AEW TV in singles action recently, facing Orange Cassidy for the AEW International Championship.
Still Intending To Perform For NJPW When Able
There is no real hard feelings between NJPW & Aussie Open however, and AEW has a very healthy working relationship with NJPW. Fletcher knows they’ll be back in Japan as a result.
“There is also the fact that there is still a New Japan relationship, that was also a big deal. The fact that AEW guys have been able to do New Japan stuff and because we already have that connection, it was very much, when we were in discussion, ‘how do you feel about still doing New Japan stuff?’
We spoke to both sides and they’re like, ‘of course, that’s not an issue. That’s still something you can do.’ That was a big part of the decision. We love the environment in AEW, there is a lot of exciting matchups there and the nationwide TV exposure is a big deal as well. A lot of different thinking went into it, but very happy with the decision.”
