Last night at NJPW Capital Collision 2023 was another huge night for Aussie Open. Earlier this month, the team of Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis would be successful in winning the IWGP World Tag Team Championships from Bishamon in the match of the night at Sakura Genesis.
However, one set of championships was not enough for Aussie Open – and they would look to regain the NJPW Strong Tag Team Championships.
Aussie Open Become 2x NJPW Strong Tag Team Champions
Aussie Open were the first team to hold the NJPW Strong Tag Team Championships, but their reign was ended after 97 days in a Triple Threat match at NJPW Rumble On 44th Street 2022.
Motor City Machine Guns were able to claim the belts, pinning Kevin Knight – meaning Aussie Open weren’t involved in the finish of the match.
Since then, they have been determined to earn another shot – and had their chance at Capital Collision. It was another Triple Threat match, with the Dream Team of Hiroshi Tanahashi & Kazuchika Okada also in the mix. However, Aussie Open were able to pin the defending champions to win the match – leaving no doubt that they were the better team on this occasion.
The New Belt Collectors In Tag Team Wrestling
This now makes Aussie Open double champions in New Japan Pro Wrestling, the first tag team to hold two sets of belts at the same time in the promotions history.
Aussie Open are well on their way to being the best tag team of 2023, especially if they keep up their belt collecting ways. Their match quality has been top notch since arriving in NJPW, and fans around the world can’t get enough of their matches.
With NJPW set to work with All Elite Wrestling later this year for Forbidden Door II – a rematch between Aussie Open & FTR is a logical step.
That was the match that stole the show at Royal Quest 2022, being widely considered as one of the best matches of the year. Currently, FTR hold the AEW World Tag Team Championships – winning them from The Gunns on a recent episode of AEW Dynamite.
