According to reports, the incident took place in Broward County as he attempted to cross a walkway. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that Dwayne had been crossing Interstate 595 near the Fort Lauderdale airport by foot when he was hit.
Thereafter, he was declared dead on the scene. An investigation is currently being held in order to determine whether or not this is going to be declared a homicide. In the meantime, the Steelers have had to process what has been a very difficult event.
Mike Tomlin, who happens to be the head of coach of the Steelers, had this say: “I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins.
“He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on and off the field and in our community.”
The event has shaken the football community in more ways than one. Dwayne was just shy of his 25th birthday, which was set to take place on Tuesday, 3rd May. And with that, it brings to an end a very abrupt career with the Steelers.
After having joined the team in 2021 on the back end of plying his trade with the Washington Commanders, there was huge optimism over what he could do.
His college football days for Ohio State were marked with numerous accolades including an MVP award in 2019. The previous Ohio State coach Urban Meyer did not hold back on his admiration.
He stated: “[Dwayne] was one of the greatest QBs in Ohio State history…an even better son, teammate, and friend.”
Dwayne will sorely be missed, but in the meantime, the only thing left to do is let the authorities investigate the matter which will give Dwayne’s family and friends some closure. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
