There’s a mystery at Sandals Emerald Bay in the Bahamas as three Americans have turned up dead but their causes of death remain unknown. Police were responding to a call about an unresponsive guest in one of the villas.
They would come across an unresponsive couple while heading to the first call on Friday, May 6 at around 9 AM, according to CNN. All three were pronounced dead at the scene with no visible signs of struggle or violence.
What Caused the Death of 3 Americans at Sandals Emerald Bay in the Bahamas?
It’s definitely a head-scratcher but police have a potential lead in one survivor. The wife of one of the deceased was found in poor shape in the first villa. Her legs and arms were swollen but first responders were able to rush her to a hospital for treatment.
While there is no cause of death, her survival could be a key in figuring out how three people mysteriously died at Sandals Emerald Bay. It was reported that the second couple received medical treatment after complaining about “nausea and vomiting” on Thursday, May 5.
Apparently, a cause for their illness couldn’t be determined and they returned to their villa. An Alabama native, Austin Chiarella, identified the couple in the first villa as Vincent and Donnis Chiarella. They had been in the Bahamas to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
He said that his mother—the only survivor—complained about feeling ill Thursday night but felt that she was fine after being allowed to return to her villa.
Chiarella said:
“She woke up and my dad was laying there on the floor, and she couldn’t move. Her legs and arms was swollen and she couldn’t move and she screamed to get someone to come in the door.”
Chris Coucheron-Aamot was a visitor at Sandals Emerald Bay and had a villa next to one of the deceased. On social media, he posted:
“Three of our neighbors in the building right next to us died and a fourth was airlifted in critical condition early yesterday.
There was crime scene tape and security guards all around our unit. It sounds like it may have been a fault with the a/c in the unit, causing a toxic coolant leak.”
While faulty air conditioning units were initially considered the culprit, food poisoning hasn’t been ruled out. Commissioner of the Royal Bahamas Police, Paul Rolle, said that the couples “ate at different places so…we’re checking all of that, which we will hopefully be able to determine whether or not it was some food or something else that caused it.”
Donnis Chiarella was airlifted to a facility in Florida for treatment while samples from the deceased were sent to Philadelphia for toxicology testing.
