The card for the huge crossover PPV between AEW & NJPW is quickly taking shape. Earlier this week on AEW Dynamite, a handful of matches were confirmed – including a clash over the IWGP United States Championship. Orange Cassidy is set to face Will Ospreay at the event, but this was not the initial match planned for Ospreay.
Andrade Reveals He Was The Originally Planned To Face Will Ospreay At Forbidden Door
During an interview with Hugo Savinovich, Andrade El Idolo would reveal that it was originally pitched for him to be the one facing Ospreay at the event. He was set to travel to Japan to kick off the feud, before they would eventually clash at Forbidden Door in a big time singles match. It’s hard to deny this match would have been anything short of incredible, as both men have been on a roll in terms of their in-ring performances.
However, Andrade El Idolo has notably been blocked off from working with NJPW talents, due to the long standing feud between AAA & CMLL in Mexico. The two top promotions have never been on good terms, and with Andrade having came into the industry through CMLL and proceeding to go to AAA instead following his WWE run? He’s now on bad terms with CMLL.
This impacts Forbidden Door due to CMLL & NJPW being long time partners, with CMLL wrestlers getting huge paydays from the Fantastica Mania tours in Japan. Meanwhile, NJPW often would use CMLL as a spot for Young Lions to take excursions. The links between CMLL & NJPW is what makes Andrade a former IWGP Intercontinental Champion under the mask of La Sombra.
Crossover shows are a nightmare to book due to issues like this. Thankfully only a handful of talent are effected, with Andrade El Idolo, Penta Oscuro & Rey Fenix being the names reportedly blocked from working Forbidden Door. Penta is in a qualifying match for the All-Atlantic Championship match this coming Wednesday, but is expected to lose to Malakai Black.
