Aydin Coban, the Dutch national who harassed Canadian teen Amanda Todd, has been found guilty on all five counts of the same thing that took the teen’s life: harassment and distributing child porn. Her suicide was highly publicized in the years prior to online harassment and cyberbullying being taken seriously.
Aydin Coban Found Guilty on All Five Counts of Online Harassment and Distributing Child Pornography in Canada
That harassment campaign began in 2009 when she was 13. Unable to deal with it any longer, Amanda Todd would post a video detailing what Coban was doing in 2012. Five weeks later, she took her own life after explicit photos of her leaked. She was 15-years-old at the time.
This verdict was the second time Aydin Coban was convicted for harassment and blackmail. The first time, a Dutch court slammed him with 11 years in 2017. It is reported that he targeted women from all over the world including Canada, the UK, and the U.S.
After being sentenced in the Netherlands, he was sent to Canada to stand trial although his role in Amanda Todd’s death wasn’t a focus but played a major role in the judge’s directions to the jury.
Despite that, Amanda’s mother was happy with the verdict feeling that it honored her memory. The jury found Coban guilty of all five counts in less than 24 hours. To her daughter, Carol Todd said:
“If I could say a message to Amanda, it would be that we always believed you. This is her moment.”
Aydin Coban will serve his sentence in the Netherlands.
