According to Mads Mikkelsen, we might see Johnny Depp back in the role of Gellert Grindelwald. This hint “leaked” during the Sarajevo film festival.
For the filming of ‘Secrets Of Dumbledore’ Johnny Depp had his hands full with the defamation trial and with the clearing of his name. That’s the reason why he skipped acting in the sequel. His place was filled by Mads Mikkelsen who confesses that he might have been there for just a short time.

Now, after Johnny Depp won the defamation trial and essentially ’cleared’ his name, he can resume work at the same pace as before. According to Mikkelsen that would mean returning to the Fantastic Beasts movie franchise as well.
Mads Mikkelsen received the Honorary Heart award in Sarajevo for contributing to the film industry. He also took the stand and spoke to the audience and the questions without hesitation led to questioning his participation in the saga Fantastic Beasts.
Mikkelsen is a very modest man. He spoke about how he is honored to be replacing an actor of Johnny Depp’s rank. He added, however, that there is a possibility that this might be it. His time as Grindelwald might be over, as Depp might return with his name cleared.
“It was very intimidating.” – Mikkelsen says. “Obviously, well, now the course has changed-he won the suit, the court case so let’s see if he comes back. He might. I’m a big fan of Johnny. I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job. Having said that, I could not copy it. There’s there was no way I could just copy it because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide.”
Mikkelsen then explained how he agreed on creating something ‘his’, giving the role a new ‘taste’. He continues to explain how some of the fans accept such changes with excitement, while others don’t even want to comprehend the situation in which he is put.
“So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me. So, yes, it was intimidating. His fans were very, very sweet, but they were also very stubborn. I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken.” – Mikkelsen concludes.
However, Warner Bros still didn’t provide any official information on the matter. Until they do so, this will remain just a rumor. A rumor that Mads Mikkelsen’s words started.
