Polio is a disease that used to wreak havoc on children decades ago. How, there’s been an uptick in cases in New York, London, and Jerusalem. While it was a terror during the early 20th century, it can be prevented via a vaccine despite there being no cure.
Vaccine-Derived Polio Causing an Uptick in Cases in NYC, London, and Jerusalem
So, why is it back and making rumblings in 2022? As with other outbreaks that have occurred this year, polio is almost unheard of in countries that are lacking as far as sanitation and medical access. This doesn’t mean it just doesn’t exist in those countries, it just doesn’t exist where it can cater to its population.
Basically, if New York City only has four sanitation trucks on the route, NYC is lacking in sanitation. This is the case with the significant number of polio cases in Nigeria in 2021 and why we’re hearing about monkeypox this year.
There are two forms of polio that people are more likely to encounter. The wild form is pretty much eradicated at this point thanks to the vaccine. The easiest way to get polio is via contact with feces. Again, this is more of an issue in countries lacking sanitation or where medical treatment is there but not easily accessible.
However, the issue here comes from vaccine-derived polio which uses disease cultures to make the vaccine. This form of polio was found in wastewater in London and New York. In fact, there was a case of paralysis in New York.
It should be stated that contracting vaccine-derived polio is very rare and that certain forms of vaccine-derived polio can present issues. In areas with low vaccination rates, the disease–which exists in the vaccine in a weakened state–is released by children in their stool after a while. This allows it to mutate back into its potent, contagious form.
