The newly crowned Queen of podcasts, Meghan Markle, released the second episode of her ‘Archetypes’ podcast series, where she welcomed the ‘diva’ Mariah Carey as her podcast guest. The duo opened various topics throughout the episode but mostly focused on the treatment of biracial people around the world.
Meghan Markle debuted her podcast on August 23rd with an episode hosting the famous tennis player Selena Williams and broke records on the Spotify platform. She dethroned the most watched podcasts in an instant. The Joe Rogan Experience, The Daily, and This American Life, all of them dropped one place in the rankings since the emergence of Meghan’s Archetypes podcast.
Meghan Markle Says People Started Treating Her As A ‘Black Woman’ After She Got Together With Prince Harry
The Archetypes podcast measures great success as it is the number one podcast in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada on Spotify’s international charts. The second episode is ‘promising’ as well. Seems like the Archetypes podcast is up on the lists and is there to stay.
The Queen of podcasts, Meghan, went on a 45-minute ramble with the 53-year-old singer Mariah Carrey in an episode named “The Duality of Diva”. During the episode the pair spoke about the word ‘diva’ itself, detailing its meaning, as well as its usage in modern-day conversations. Since both of them are bi-racial, the Duchess of Sussex and the Pop Diva decided on sharing their experience of the everyday life of biracial people.
Mariah Carrey is the first to steer the conversation in this direction as she explained the struggles she went through during her early days. She referred to the time as a period when she couldn’t fit anywhere, regardless of where she went. She ascribed this to being biracial.
“I didn’t fit in. I didn’t fit in. You know, it would be more of the Black area of town or then you could be where my mom chose to live, were the more, the white neighborhoods. And I didn’t fit in anywhere at all.” – the famous singer started the ramble.
Meghan Markle immediately ‘clicked’ with the singer. She agreed with her and confessed to being a ‘victim’ of the same kind of treatment herself.
“You were so formative for me. Representation matters so much.” – the Duchess said. “But when you are a woman and you don’t see a woman who looks like you somewhere in a position of power or influence, or even just on the screen — because we know how influential media is — you came onto the scene, I was like ‘Oh, my gosh. Someone kind of looks like me. ‘ ”
“I had read this article about Halle Berry. They were asking her how she felt being treated as a mixed-race woman in the world. And her response was her saying, ‘Well, your experience through the world is how people view you.’ So she said because she was darker in color, she was being treated as a Black woman, not as a mixed woman.” – Meghan continues. “And I think for us, it’s very different because we’re light-skinned. People don’t treat you as a Black woman. And people don’t treat you as a white woman. You sort of fit in between. I mean, if there’s any time in my life that it’s been more focused on my race, it’s only once I started dating my husband. Then I started to understand what it was like to receive treatment like a Black woman.”
The Duchess then claimed that for all her life, she did not know how it is to be treated like a black person. Adding that she felt that only after she started dating Prince Harry.
“Because up until then, people treated me like a mixed woman. And things really shifted.” The duo then agreed that during her life she also felt forced to choose between identifying as white, or black. There was no option to choose how she felt. And she sees this as very interesting.
“As mixed woman, because I always thought it should be okay to say I’m mixed. Like it should be okay to say that. But people want you to choose.” – the ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ singer reveals her view.
The recognition of mixed-race people around the world is a problem that the world will need to work on. This is the conclusion of this episode of the number one podcast.
Seems like breaking the charts will not be a problem for Archetypes in the following period. Each time Meghan decides to drop a new episode, she will give the charts a shake. The Serena Williams episode did its thing and launched the podcast at the top of the charts. So, now Meghan’s goal should be finding interlocutors that will contribute to the trend she is trying to set on the platform.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry signed a multi-year partnership with Spotify and the royal’s company Archewell Audio back in 2020. The podcast now presents just a continuation of the collaboration between both sides.
According to Meghan, the goal of the Archetypes podcast is to “investigate the labels that try to hold women back.”
The Duchess’ plan is to arrange conversations with people that have knowledge on the matter, such as historians and experts. Through the conversations, she will try to “uncover the origin of the stereotypes surrounding women. She’ll have uncensored conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape narratives.”
The Queen of Podcasts announced that next week’s guest will be Mindy Kaling. An American actress, writer, and producer, best known for her role as Kelly Kapoor in the Office series.
