The main topic for most of the time at Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast is the stereotypes surrounding women. In her latest episode of the podcast, the Duchess of Sussex slammed Hollywood and all the sitcoms, mentioning How I Met Your Mother in particular. She took a swing at the controversial and lately ‘negatively’ popular Jordan Peterson as well.
Meghan Markle comes forward to confess that people called her ‘hysterical’ and ‘crazy’. This is up until Prince Harry helped her find a good therapist who guided her to massively improve her life.

The Duchess of Sussex also points out that there were times in her life when she felt ‘lonely’ and not fitting anywhere. She confessed that she did not fit in school, and how now when she is an adult, she strives to feel ‘so deeply it’s like an Adele album’. Furthermore, Meghan Markle tells how she doesn’t look like an emotional person, as she is condemned to not show emotions in public.
“Raise your hand if someone ever called you crazy or hysterical or what about nuts? Insane out of your mind, completely irrational, okay? You get the point.” – she said in the beginning of the most recent episode of her podcast. “Now, if we were all in the same room and could see each other, I think it would be pretty easy to see. Just how many of us have our hands up? By the way, me too. And it’s no wonder when you consider just how prevalent these labels are in our culture.”
While continuing on the topic, the Duchess of Sussex referred to a quote from ‘How I Met Your Mother’ series. One of the main characters, a womanizer Barney Stinson, explains the correlation between a woman’s looks and ‘craziness’. “If she’s this crazy, she has to be this hot.” – Barney mentions in one of the sitcom’s episodes.
In addition to the movie and series quotes, Meghan Markle referred to Jordan Peterson as well. The psychologist often makes statements about women, and Meghan Markle apparently is not a fan of it. For this episode of Archetypes, she chose one of his quotes – “I don’t think that men can control crazy women.”
“Calling someone crazy or hysterical completely dismisses their experience and minimizes what they’re feeling.” – Meghan said. “It keeps going to the point where anyone receiving this label enough times can be gaslit into thinking that they’re actually unwell. Sometimes worse, to the point where they ignore real issues of all kinds. Well, that’s not happening today.”
The Duchess continues to explain how her mental health battle made her think about ending her life. She explains how calling women ‘crazy’ can make great damage to a person, especially if they are already struggling with something.
“I feel pretty strongly about this word, this label crazy. The way that it’s thrown around so casually and the damage – it’s rotten (for) society and women. Frankly everywhere.” – Meghan Markle says. “From relationships to families shattering down, the reputations destroyed and careers ruined. The stigma surrounding the word, it also has this silencing effect. This effect, women experiencing real mental health issues. They stay quiet, they internalize, and they repress for far too long.”
As a result of all this, and all that she went through, Meghan Markle decided to start a fund. The main goal of the fundraiser would be to empower and support women in need.
