In Louisville, Kentucky, Customs officers are fighting a continuous battle over fake driver’s licenses with almost 8,000 seized in the last two weeks of October 2022 alone. On October 27, authorities managed to nab over 4,400 fraudulent driver’s licenses across two seizures.

The shipments arrived at the Louisville International Airport from Hong Kong. One shipment contained 2,857 fake IDs while the other had 1,565. It was mentioned that the bogus driver’s licenses featured different states and that this seizure was the third in ten days. The first occurred in October 12 and netted 1,094 bogus IDs while the October 24 seizure netted 2,265.
In the October 27 seizure, it was noted that the IDs were for people who were college-aged and “issued from” California, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Wisconsin. While the first thought might be that underaged students and others are using the IDs for booze and illegal driving, Louisville Port Director Thomas Mahn says that’s not all:
“That’s a lot of counterfeit driver’s licenses and the reason is not always so college age kids, who are under 21, can consume alcohol, but also be utilized for fraudulent activities. Many of these licenses can and would be used to defraud government benefit programs, commit credit fraud by using a false identity, or carry out consumer fraud, which can damage the economy and cost the American people.”
