Lucha Underground is a wrestling show I always look forward to rewatching. Even in the final season, it was still a fun show to watch as things were constantly developing and the underlying story of the company being involved in all kinds of illegal, dark, shady, supernatural stuff is awesome.
It’s as if a wrestling company ran at the Titty Twister in From Dusk Till Dawn—another El Rey show. Episode three appears to be more of a story episode looking at the card. Let’s see how the matches stack up.
The Undercard
So, one pro of the undercard is that it breezes by and it’s mainly floated by character work and storyline development. The matches themselves weren’t anything special. We get a minis bout between Mascarita Sagrada and El Mariachi Loco which was decent and mostly for Chavo Guerrero Jr to show up and be a super heel.
At the same time, Mascarita Sagrada looked good in the match first, so we got a twofer. I’ll give it a thumbs in the middle. Mil Muertes spanking Ricky Mandel gets a thumbs down. Easy clapping for Muertes but not an interesting one.
The Main Event
We get to the highly-praised main event of episode three: Rey Fenix taking on brother Pentagon Jr and Drago in a triple threat showdown. If you weren’t familiar with these guys, you were getting a high-energy surprise.
However, if you know of these three, you’re more interested in how this match will turn out in Lucha Underground’s setting.
I’d liken this match to your standard AAA high flyer stuff: exciting, crazy dives, fast-paced…it was similar to 2000s high-flying stuff on the indies. A spotfest that worked perfectly with LU’s product.
I was sold on all three but Pentagram Jr really caught my attention while Rey Fenix would end up being that guy for dope matches in season one. I’m giving this one a thumbs up.
Lucha Underground S1 E3 Verdict: Bronze (Thumbs Down for the Undercard, Thumbs Up for the Main Event)
The main event was great. It was a main event that you’d expect from modern wrestling TV where it’s not rare to get a PPV-quality match on TV. This would’ve been a treat in the 2000s on a similarly tiered show.
As for the rest of the undercard: blah. The opener was there and while it wasn’t bad, introducing the minis like “We have minis in this lucha libre fight club too” was expected but not desired. I dig them in AAA but I wasn’t anticipating them in the company.
Fortunately, Mascarita Sagrada was there and he’s a cool, talented mini.
There was good build-up for Mil Muertes’ character and on the show as a whole. The world-building was really good in the first three episodes. Then again, Lucha Underground really had four episodes to establish what kind of scene it was while fitting the focus and demo of El Rey.
While this was a meh show with a good main event, it was on point with the storylines and character work.
