The man behind one of the most successful series on today’s TV, Netflix’s The Crown showrunner Peter Morgan finally confessed to making up the story about Prince Charles wanting to overthrow Queen Elizabeth from her throne. The Crown is a series that is full of controversies. They keep piling up as the new episodes air. However, this one is the one that had a particularly big impact on the royal family and the one that started the biggest reactions from the public and the critics.
Peter Morgan said that he ‘had to do it’. The situation was such, that he was really tempted to use the opportunity and portray the ‘powerful’ Dominic West and the ‘vulnerable’ Imelda Staunton in the light that they can shine the best.
Peter Morgan Finally Confesses On Making Up The Plot About Prince Charles’ Scheme To Overthrow The Queen
The fifth season of the series aired just a couple of days ago, and it didn’t disappoint the public. It is all that they ever expected from it. Controversial, dramatic, exciting, and slightly untrue, the new season seems like it will be the most popular one until now.
Peter Morgan has a very creative mind. Too creative some would say. Due to his ability to make things massively more exciting than they really are, he made numerous tweaks and turns throughout the storyline of the series and managed to make it one of the most anticipated series of all time.
The fourth season of the series received massive criticism from the royal family spokespeople. They claim that the season is full of ‘untrue moments’. That the director did very little to let people know that they are not 100% true. That’s why the series crew finally fell under the influence of the critics and added a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode in the new season.
One of the most controversial and shocking moments of the series is the moment when Prince Charles lobbies to have his mother Queen Elizabeth abdicate. The camera shows him seating next to the Prime Minister, John Mayor, and encouraging him to pressure his mother to abdicate.
It is now, that finally, Peter Morgan confesses to adde just because of the ‘dynamic that both actors had between them’.
“I think it was clear the minute they opened their mouths at the read-through. I was like ‘oh, blimey’, I remember thinking, oh, wow, that’s different. The minute Dominic started reading the part of Charles it was like, Okay, this is a very powerful character now.” – Peter Morgan revealed during a recent podcast. “’This is not where we’d left off with Charles.”
Peter Morgan blames it all on the character of Dominic West. He says that he wrote the scene thinking the past actor, Josh O’Connor, would play it. However, when the same words came out of the mouth of Dominic West, the different tone that they had in them was evident.
“With Josh O’Connor, there’s a sort of delicacy, a vulnerability, and a fragility to him. All of which was riveting for a young Charles at that period becoming Prince of Wales and so forth. Dominic has none of that. He’s a baritone, confident man in his prime.
“And so, when you combine that with Imelda being naturally a more vulnerable person… that suddenly left you with a completely different power balance between Queen and Prince of Wales. Suddenly, he felt like a very significant threat.” – the director told his host. “I thought, okay, I recognize what happens here. I can’t write against this, I have to write with this. So I did go away and write more about the threat that the Prince of Wales poses. Or his frustrations or suddenly he was a king and waiting and suddenly he’s looking at his watch going, ‘When is it my turn?’”
In addition to this, Peter Morgan also told how he used the Royal Yacht Britannia as a metaphor for Queen Elizabeth.
“It’s just this perfect embodiment of her reign.” – Peter Morgan said. “And so that was a natural opportunity to go then from the launch (of the yacht in 1953) to where it was. And all the accompanying jokes about wear and tear. It just lent itself naturally to a doctor’s surgery and a checkup. You just see what’s happened to skin, what’s happened to feet, what’s happened to weight.
As soon as the new season of the series aired, the internet lit on fire. People were constantly tweeting and posting about the series. Most of the comments are praising the whole assembly that makes the series. However, there are some comments noticing a couple of things that are ‘wrong’.
It is obvious that Dominic West and King Charles have completely different charms, different character, and appearance. Of course, people took notice of that and immediately blamed the ‘responsible people’ for miscasting Dominic West as Prince Charles.
On the other hand, Elizabeth Debicki receives numerous acknowledgments for ‘killing it’ as Princess Diana. The way she depicted the late Princess Diana is unique and extremely authentical. Many even already suggest that she should have an Emmy award for it.
“Give all the Emmys to Elizabeth Debicki.” – One user said. “#ElizabethDebicki is honestly the first person I’ve seen who has played Diana perfectly. She’s the perfect mix.”
The series is easily one of the most popular series on Netflix. Now, containing the little disclaimer claiming that some of the events are fictional everybody can relax. All can enjoy the magnificent work of all the actors and the remaining series crew.
