A Hong Kong taxi driver and his passenger were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking on November 11, 2022. This bust and seizure was initiated by the Mong Kok criminal investigation unit and made use of the tried and true roadblock.
Taxi Driver and Passenger Arrested in Hong Kong with 9.5 Pounds of Meth – Street Value of Over $318K
The roadblock was set up on Sai Yee Street in Mong Kok and the traffickers drove into the stop at around 1 AM. Authorities stopped the car for inspection and turned up 4.3kg (9.5lbs) of meth in a bag.
Drug-sniffing dogs found nothing else in the car after the initial search. The seized drugs had a street value of $318,550. Both the 55-year-old taxi driver and his 22-year-old partner in crime were arrested for trafficking meth.
Trafficking in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia is treated very seriously. Drugs such as meth and heroin tend to carry either lengthy prison sentences or—in peak zero-tolerance cases—the death penalty.
In the case of this Hong Kong meth bust, the two traffickers are looking at a maximum of life imprisonment and a fine of a little over $639,000 or HK$5 million.
