In what was the Indianapolis Metro PD’s biggest drug seizure, authorities seized almost 290 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop on I-70. The seizure occurred on November 30, 2022 following a tip-off that cocaine would be passing through Marion County.
Texas Man Arrested in the Biggest Cocaine Seizure in Decades for Indianapolis Authorities
In a release from the Indianapolis Metro PD on December 6, 2022, a drug-sniffing dog alerted authorities to the presence of drugs in the truck. Also, Mauro Alonzo-Vargas (50) was identified as the driver of the truck moving the drugs.
Alonzo-Vargas is a resident of Ennis, Texas who initially claimed that he had a delivery for Plainfield but the actual destination wasn’t revealed by the suspect.
When the drugs were weighed, they came out to 286.6 pounds or about 130 kilograms. The street value was estimated at $13 million. Sgt. Paul McDonald told FOX 59 that while the PD has had “some significant seizures” over the years, this particular seizure is the biggest.
DEA assistant special agent in charge Mike Gannon added:
“When you’re talking 130 kilos of cocaine, that’s a significant seizure no matter where you are. You know how many drug suppliers could be moving that on the streets in all different communities?”
Mauro Alonzo-Vargas was booked on December 1 but was released from the Hendricks County Jail on $20,000 bond.
