Claudio Castagnoli needs to defeat Chris Jericho, as that is the only thing that can clear doubts in his head about his abilities. He’s been able to defeat Jericho in tag team situations, but both times the ROH World Championship was on the line – Jericho came away with the victory, winning the belt at Grand Slam and defending at Full Gear. Tonight, Jericho gives Castagnoli one last chance – but there’s an extra stipulation in the mix tonight. If Jericho wins, Castagnoli must join the Jericho Appreciation Society – leaving Blackpool Combat Club behind.
Claudio Castagnoli Wastes No Time Looking For The Victory Over Chris Jericho
Castagnoli would quickly take Jericho to the floor, driving him into the announce desk, barricade and steel steps. Back in the ring, a flying crossbody would be followed by the Hammer & Anvil elbows – before some rushing uppercuts. Jericho would look for the Codebreaker, with Castagnoli flaunting his power. Jericho would end up taking the Gotch Style Neutralizer for an early near fall.
Avalanche Gutwrench Suplex would follow, before Jericho was lifted into a press slam onto the top rope. A big boot to the face would drive Jericho to the barricade, but he was able to avoid the rolling senton off the apron from Castagnoli. Driving Castagnoli into the ring post would add some extra damage, before a kick to the spine in the ring.
Jericho would nail some knife edge chops by the ropes, before running into Swiss Death for a near fall. More Hammer & Anvil elbow smashes would follow, with Jericho breaking free and hitting some lariats in the corner. Avalanche Hurricanrana would be preceded by some downward punches, but blocked by the power of Castagnoli who wanted Ricola Bomb – only to be launched with the hurricanrana.
Castagnoli would block a codebreaker and try for the giant swing, only to be sent to the floor with a lariat. Jericho would try for the triangle dropkick, and was caught in mid-air with the uppercut. Castagnoli would be taken off the apron with a suplex, but both men were able to roll back into the ring.
Blackpool Combat Club Remains At Full Power
Jericho would hit some forearm smashes, before taking a big boot to the face. He’d stand tall before both men looked for lariats, causing a double down. They’d struggle to their feet before more strikes traded in the middle of the ring, Jericho using chops while Castagnoli used uppercuts – before an eye poke from Jericho.
The Giant Swing would be blocked into the Walls of Jericho in the middle of the ring, with Castagnoli making the long crawl to the bottom rope. Jericho would run into an uppercut after wasting time arguing with the referee. Matt Menard & Angelo Parker would run the distraction, allowing Jericho to use the bat to seemingly knock Castagnoli out.
This was how Jericho won the belt, but Castagnoli refused to lose like that tonight. Castagnoli would take a Codebreaker, and Judas Effect was next. Jericho would be waiting for Castagnoli to reach his feet, giving time to recover. Giant Swing would follow, with thirty rotations – and Jericho would tap out along the way. Castagnoli remains in Blackpool Combat Club, and is a two time champion.
