Outside of a lack of evidence, there wasn’t much to prevent authorities from prodding more into this incident at the time. According to reports from the day of the shooting, Carl Jarvis was found naked between the bed and a bedroom wall—with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
Gunshot wounds to the back of the head or the back are generally suspicious when it’s an issue of self-defense or self-preservation. It points to shooting someone who is either retreating, leaving, or unaware. In this case, police had someone who called about a domestic dispute and then claimed that the aggressor had shot himself—in the back of the head.
However, more was necessary to really pinch Judith Jarvis. While Judith claimed that the blood found on her pajamas was because of a goose bite, they were taken as evidence. A forensic expert looked over the findings and determined “that it would be essentially impossible for the victim to shoot himself in the manner in which the body was found.”
The pajamas were run through DNA testing where it was found that it matches Carl’s DNA. In a December 13, 2022 press conference, the Pennsylvania State Police announced that troopers had arrested Judith Jarvis in Lancaster County and charged her in the murder of Carl Jarvis.
She sits in the Cumberland County Prison without bail.
