In a wild story of cheating in high school sports, the assistant coach, head coach, and junior varsity coach for the Churchland High School girls basketball team were all canned after the assistant coach pretended to be a 13-year-old player. The assistant coach, Arlisha Boykins (22) took part in a JV basketball tournament on January 21, 2023.
Virginia High School Fires Three Coaches After the 22-Year-Old Assistant Coach Entered a Game As a Ringer and Pretended to Be a Student Player
Boykins stepped in as one of Churchland’s players couldn’t make the tournament game that Saturday. Instead of backing out, the coaches apparently agreed to run their 22-year-old assistant coach as a player.
She got into the uniform and video shows her performing a coach with a collegiate basketball background would be expected to perform against underclassmen. The Virginia High School League and Churchland High School officials found out about the act but the League left the decision up to the schools on how to deal with it.
Churchland officials met with parents and players about the issue. The school had already decided to boot the coaches but the decision of what to do about the season was another story. It was decided that the JV and varsity teams would sit out the rest of the season.
Currently, Churchland HS is looking into the situation to find out how this happened and why the coaches got on board with the plan. The father of girl Boykins replaced said of the incident:
“Coaches always preach to the kids about integrity and those types of things, so I was just shocked.”
WAVY reports that the family is seeking an apology from the school division and that the girl no longer wishes to pursue basketball.
