In Yucatán, Mexico, a Polish tourist was struck on the head with a stick after he’d climbed the revered Chichén Itzá Mayan pyramid Kukulcán. The temple, a limestone structure built to the snake deity Kukulcán is most identifiable by its step pyramid architecture with the temple itself being at the top.
Polish Tourist Attacked by Locals in Mexico After Climbing Protected Serpent God Pyramid
The temple is considered a structure of historical and cultural significance. As a result, the structure is protected by the law in Mexico. However, one country’s holy sites or protected site might not be viewed as such by some tourists.
One tourist was in the group that didn’t seem to care and he climbed the steps of the pyramid. In footage from the incident, we see the locals gathering and waiting for the man to come down before arguing with him. After he comes down from the pyramid, he was hit on the head with a stick for his deeds.
The tourist was held for roughly 12 hours and given a $5,000 fine in pesos.
