AEW Dark begins with Tony Schiavone and Cody in front of one of the usual greenscreens. Actually this might be from Cody’s house I’m not sure… they talk up what a commentary duo they made on Dynamite this past week. They quickly talk about the big announcement of the week, an eight-person tournament to crown the brand new TNT Champion. One half of the bracket is revealed tonight and it’s two sets of PPV rematches. Cody vs. Shawn Spears and Darby Allin vs. Sammy Guevara. Cody notes that he’s got history with both Darby and Sammy that he could be paired up against in the semis.
AEW World Champion Jon Moxley will be making his first AEW Dark appearance here tonight, uniquely. And then we’re brought to our first match of the evening, with Matt Sells coming back to take on Sammy Guevara. Cody and Tony are doing some pretty clear post-commentary here, continuing to be mindful of how many people are allowed in an arena.
Sammy Guevara vs. Matt Sells
Sammy not sweating Sells, doing the Eddie Guerrero lounging on the top rope. Sammy ducks a lock-up, hip toss, poses on Sells’ body. Flips above him a few times, standing dropkick into a nip-up, takes a bow. Body slam, goes up top with a swagger in his step. Starts to pose like he’s gonna fly but then he just hops to his feet and smacks Sells. Sammy starts talking trash to the camera, but Sells is up quick. Sammy turns around, gets a kick to the gut, snapmare, Sells wraps his legs around his head and starts clapping, turns him around and drives his face into the mat time and again, charging knee to the face, cover for a 2 count. Sells wants some big lariat but Sammy pump kicks it away, Sells catches another kick but it’s turned into a big spinning heel kick for a nearfall!
Knife edge chop in the corner, whip to the opposite corner, shoulder thrust as he goes to the outside, enziguri, roll into the ring for the spring-up cutter. Flexes, slowly goes for a cover, but then pulls him from the mat before the three. Just kicking him around the ring. Pulls him up to his feet, hoists him way up, delayed vertical suplex nailed. Chinlock cinched in. Sells trying to fight out of it, makes his way to his feet, gets a forearm to the back. Sammy pulls him up onto his shoulders with ease, does a squat and turn. Another squat, just showing off his deceptive strength. Matt escapes from behind, series of forearms, right hand. Sammy whips him into the corner, catches a kick, but Sells surprises him with a knee lift to the face. Drops him facefirst onto his knee, into a neckbreaker for a nearfall! Sammy is checking his teeth!
Sells humps the mat a bit, kicks, seems to be looking for a stunner but Sammy escapes, running high knee! Hoists him up into Burning Hammer position, flips him back into a GTS which Cody and Tony dub the Burning GTS, that gets the victory.
Winner: Sammy Guevara
Roughly as pure a squash as you’ll see. The only reason Sells ever got any offense at all was because Sammy was getting super cocky. Sammy takes up a mic after and says that’s another Q for the Best Ever, Sammy Guevara. Nobody in the back or watching at home can do what he does, everything he does, he’s the best at it. He’s in the Inner Circle because he’s the Best Ever. If anybody back there wants to test him, by all means, try it and you’re gonna fall. Calls himself the ruler of all wrestlers and all you wrestlers will bow before the king. Demands they put his music back on as he celebrates.
