At Ring of Honor Supercard of Honor 2023, many felt that would be Brian Cage’s final match under Tony Khan. His contract was at it’s end, and the last loose end was Cage dropping the ROH World Six Man Tag Team Championships.
Things took a turn when instead of losing however, Cage would score the deciding fall to keep the belts on The Embassy.
Following this, Swerve Strickland would join the faction and Cage would beat down Darby Allin on AEW Rampage – and we now know that Cage is staying put in AEW.
Brian Cage Signs New Deal With AEW
A report from Fightful would state that Brian Cage signed a new contract with AEW/ROH earlier this week – with the length unclear.
There was interest from WWE in brining Cage in, meaning it’s possible that the recent hiring freeze in WWE was crucial in Tony Khan being able to keep Cage around.
Chris Jericho had also been vocal about wanting Cage to stick with AEW, with Jericho as someone known to help influence the choices of Khan.
When Cage first arrived in AEW, he was shot to the main event with a program against Jon Moxley while being managed by Taz.
This would be short lived, and since then – Cage has been a victim of start/stop booking, often going months without being on TV. Cage essentially became the posterboy of misused talents in AEW during this time.
2022 Saw A Rise Of The Machine
Things would improve in late 2022, when Cage would find a steady role in ROH and found more TV time in AEW, facing the likes of Dante Martin, Ricky Starks, Bryan Danielson and Konosuke Takeshita.
This run of matches reminded fans how dynamic the style of Cage was, and renewed interest in him in AEW. Now with Cage working alongside Swerve Strickland, we can expect even more Cage on AEW TV moving forward.
