When it was first announced that former WWE Champion CM Punk would be returning to professional wrestling as part of All Elite Wrestling – few could have predicted the year that would follow. Punk made his in-ring return at All Out 2021, defeating Darby Allin – and would go on to feud with Eddie Kingston & MJF.
He would win the AEW World Championship from Hangman Page at Double Or Nothing 2022, and suffered a broken foot shortly after.
Things would descend into chaos following this, with a backstage brawl against The Elite at All Out 2022 being the last we saw of Punk. He suffered a torn tricep during that show, and was suspended following the brawl – but is now getting ready for his return to the ring.
Warner Has Been Informed CM Punk Is Coming Back, Expected To Work With Chris Jericho
Andrew Zarian of The Mat Men Podcast would appear on the Wrestling Observer Live podcast, to share the information he had gathered about the in-ring return of CM Punk. He would confirm that this return is in the works – saying the following.
“So the story here is that CM Punk’s return is essentially happening. I know for a fact that Warner has been told that he’s coming back.”
When it comes to plans for Punk upon his return, Zarian had the following to say.
“Punk had recently said he wants to return to AEW and he wants to make it work. The issue here is he’s willing to work with The Elite members. I know as of the time I was told and early this week, there was no intention on the other side. Maybe Kenny a little bit more than The Bucks but they do not want to work with him. There’s been no dialogue between the two sides either about sitting down and making this work.
The way it was alluded to me is that the programme will probably be Punk and Jericho in some capacity. I don’t know if FTR’s involved or the Jericho Appreciation Society is involved…Jericho is willing to make this work.”
Jericho & Punk Have Worked Many Matches In The Past
Chris Jericho had called CM Punk a ‘cancer to the locker room’ following the Brawl Out incident. However, Jericho & Punk have worked together in the past – feuding against each other in WWE. They would have 14 matches against each either, which would even include a match at WrestleMania 28.
If Punk is able to work an angle with Jericho without incident, it might help to calm down people backstage like The Elite. There is big money to be made in a feud between Punk & The Elite, and AEW will likely want to get this match on the card for All In at Wembley Stadium.
The return of CM Punk will likely have a mixed reaction, but fans will have to accept that it is happening. Much like how Jeff Hardy got a fantastic reaction for his recent return – we can expect the same for Punk.
