In the past paced world of professional wrestling, it can be easy to forget someone when they’re put on the shelf due to injury. This is the case with Santana, a member of the All Elite Wrestling roster.
Injured during the Blood & Guts match from June 6th, 2022 – Santana has been out of the spotlight since then, but almost a year later – is preparing for his in-ring return.
Santana Set For In-Ring Return, Tag Team Future Remains Unclear
During the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer would note that Santana is set to return to the ring very soon.
Meltzer would also touch on the reported issues between Santana & his tag team partner Ortiz – who had a falling out prior to Blood & Guts. Due to this, it’s currently unclear what the plans for Santana’s return will be.
Since arriving in AEW in 2019, Santana & Ortiz have been a steady name in the tag team division, facing the likes of The Young Bucks, FTR & Best Friends in critically acclaimed matches. If their issues have been solved over the past year – they would once again fit into the tag team division with ease.
Ortiz has been sparsely seen in the ring lately due to an injury to Eddie Kingston, who was his key ally in recent storylines. He was last seen on AEW programming in the Face of the Revolution Ladder Match, and ROH programming with a loss to Brian Cage.
A Suitable Singles Star Should A Tag Team Role Be Out Of The Question
Should Santana be returning as a singles star, there is reason to believe this will be successful. While singles matches have been uncommon in his career, he always carried a certain babyface fire in his style – even when wrestling as a heel. His most notable singles match in AEW came in 2020 against Jon Moxley, with it being ‘an eye for an eye’ match.
Simply put, Santana has all the skills needed to fit in either the singles or tag team ranks of AEW. Due to his experience in the tag team division, it would be an easier fit. However, with some hard work, fans would accept him as a singles threat for the TNT or International Championships as well.
Should he need to join a faction, his past with Moxley and hard hitting mentality could see him join up with the Blackpool Combat Club. Bullet Club Gold is another possible faction for Santana, currently containing just Jay White & Juice Robinson.
