He couldn’t use his name due to WWE owning his name through copyright. As of now, they don’t own the Rhodes name of his meaning that he can fully own the Rhodes name. This is massive for Cody, who has just been going by his first name for a very long time.

In the latest episode of Dynamite, Cody did go on to say about his last name returning. He admitted that he doesn’t know if the announcer would say his last name as he enters the ring but it’s back with him. With a tie in his eye, you felt the emotion while watching this part of the show.
For someone like Cody Rhodes where his blood runs through wrestling and a lot of his character is inspired by his late father; Dusty Rhodes. With Dream on his chest from the American Dream Dusty. The fact that he can use his own name must feel great for him and makes it feel like Cody Rhodes has returned to wrestling.
Will this be used in a story?
Cody Rhodes has been teasing a heel turn for a while. Now that he has his full name back maybe this could be used to add fuel to his turn. With a name like the American Nightmare surely a heel turn is on the cards at some point.
The horsemen faction seems to have recently disappeared but is this long term booking at its finest and he was waiting for his name to return to finally construct a heel faction in AEW? Only time will tell.
