The FA Cup continues to be the oldest domestic cup competition in world sport. However, many have claimed over the last couple of years that the magic of the cup has been fading, with bigger clubs often undervaluing the competition.

However, on Monday night we witnessed possibly one of the greatest games in the competitions 150-year history, as Tottenham Hotspur and Everton played out a nine-goal thriller at Goodison Park.

    Soccer News: Everton Outlast Spurs

The game started off with an opener inside three minutes for Spurs, but that was as good as it would get for Jose Mourinho’s side in the opening half. They allowed Everton to get back into the game, and just as half-time was approaching, the Toffees were ahead 3-1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson turned the game in their favour, but an Erik Lamela goal in first-half injury time threatened to offer a route back into the game for Spurs.

Tottenham did drag themselves level 12 minutes into the second half when Davinson Sanchez scored his second of the game. But, Everton were back ahead within ten minutes after Richarlison netted his second of the game. However, extra-time was required after Harry Kane came off the bench to seal a 4-4 draw after 90 minutes. However, the England captain’s goal was in vain in the end, as the tie was eventually won in the seventh minute of extra-time, as Bernard scored the winning goal.

Soccer News: Other FA Cup Results

It’s been a busy week of fifth round action in the FA Cup, as teams have been fighting for their place in the quarterfinal stage. Including Everton, six teams have already secured their passage through to the next round. There are still two games remaining, with Wolves playing Southampton, and Chelsea visiting Barnsley on Thursday evening.

Bournemouth were the first side to book their place, as they beat Premier League side Burnley on Tuesday evening. They were joined by Manchester United later on in the evening, as Scott McTominay scored the winner in extra-time against West Ham United. Cross-city rivals Manchester City eased into the next round with a 3-1 win against Swansea last night, while Leicester City and Sheffield United also picked up 1-0 wins against Brighton & Hove Albion and Bristol City respectively. The draw for the quarterfinals of the FA Cup takes place tonight before Chelsea kick off against Barnsley.
