Earlier tonight, we reported that Xia Li was on hand for Smackdown Live. She was around to work a dark match before the show, but she wasn’t the only one on hand. There was a handful of talent from also from NXT, including Aliyah, Daniel Vidot, Odyssey Jones, and Austin Theory. However one name was a complete shock, as Davey Boy Smith Jr. made his WWE in-ring return after a decade away.
Davey Boy Smith Jr. Teamed With Austin Theory
Prior to Smackdown, these six talents would make up two matches. Xia Li faced Aliyah in a winning effort, while Davey Boy Smith Jr. teamed with Austin Theory to take on Odyssey Jones & Daniel Vidot. Watchers of NXT will know Theory from his involvement in The Way faction, as well as having briefly been involved with both Andrade & Seth Rollins on the WWE main roster. Jones is in the 2021 NXT Breakout tournament, and Vidot has yet to make his TV debut for NXT.
Smith’s involvement was confirmed from fan photos ahead of the event, but I was unable to find results from the match. The last time Smith Jr. wrestled for WWE was back in April of 2011, when he lost to Zack Ryder on an episode of Superstars. He was around to help induct his father in the WWE Hall of Fame as well.
An NXT UK Return Was Planned For Smith Jr.
This isn’t the major shock that it could have been, as WWE & Smith Jr. have been talking in recent years about a return. He was originally set to return to the NXT UK brand, where he likely would have been set up as a major contender for NXT UK Champion WALTER. However, due to COVID-19, those plans fell through.
Provided he was able to impress tonight, WWE are likely to bring him back in. He was very young during his first run in WWE, and now at 35 years old he has vastly improves as a wrestler as shown by his time in companies like NJPW, Pro Wrestling NOAH and MLW. We could very well see him make his proper TV return very soon.
