Bandido Successfully Defends ROH World Championship Against Matt Taven In Mexico

Since defeating RUSH to win the ROH World Championship, Bandido has wasted no time making a reputation as a fighting champion. He was able to defeat Flip Gordon at Glory By Honor, and survived a Four Corners match against Flamita, Brody King & EC3. Now he’s been able to make his third defense, as he travelled down to Mexico and went head to head with Matt Taven.

Bandido & Matt Taven Have A Great Main Event For Bandido’s Promotion

This was a big match for Bandido, especially given how beloved both names are down in Mexico. Bandido makes sense, as he was one of the best up and coming names from Mexico, but Taven was a bit of a shock hit when he worked for CMLL back in 2018. They’d be in the main event of a Big Lucha event. This is a promotion run by Bandido, and the show “Big Lucha Mexicanos Al Grito De Guerra” was held in his own gym.

Other ROH talent came along for the trip, including The Briscoes, Delirious, PJ Black, Rey Horus & Demonic Flamita. By all accounts, it was a fun show and the main event is one worth seeking out. Both men are great workers, and their styles meshed well. Taven cut a promo after the match, expressing how much he loves wrestling down in Mexico.

There is a small issue of why Taven in ROH canon is getting a title match when he lost that right of challenge to Vincent. It’s likely ROH will address this beyond a single post on their website, but is a baffling choice given recent storylines in ROH.

A Controversial Name In The Mix

However, there was some controversy coming out of this event. One of the names on the card was Travis Banks. The former NXT UK star was fired from WWE after his name came up in the Speaking Out movement in 2020. Banks has kept his head down, and this was his first match since March 14th, 2020.

Bandido likely had a hand in picking the talent on the card, putting a measure of the blame on him. It’s unclear if this could lead to Banks being brought into ROH or not, but it would be a blow to their reputation. Do you think booking Travis Banks was a mistake?
