There are some things that seem destined to be special, and this day in wrestling history saw one of those when Rey Mysterio won back the Cruiserweight Championship from Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc.
October 26, 1997 was a special night as Rey and Eddie set out to do something special in their match, and the result was something that many consider the best match in WCW history.
Everyone set out to make a mark somewhere, and sometimes we need that little extra help for things to fall into place.
Meant to be
At the time, the luchalibre style of wrestling was still fairly new, so most wrestlers didn’t incorporate the moves into their arsenal yet.
This made it special and not over used in the United States, and Rey and Eddie were two of the pioneers that brought it to us and this match is a testament to their ability and dedication.
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the following excerpt.
“When the time finally came to go out and wrestle, I was completely motivated. I wanted to tear the house down. For Rey and for myself. I wanted to prove that we were more than just filler. We went out there and our match was amazing from the word go. Rey and I couldn’t do anything wrong: the timing, the psychology, everything was right on the money. The crowd was tremendous, responding exactly the way we wanted them to. The ‘Eddy sucks’ chants began the second I walked down the ramp and never let up.
“We made a point of trying out innovative new moves, things we’d never even thought of before that match. Sometimes that can screw you up, but that night was special. Everything flowed. Everything fell right into place. At one point, Rey did this awesome move, flipping off the top rope and hitting a crazy backflip DDT on me. To this day, we haven’t been able to duplicate it. We’ve tried, but it never comes off the way it did at Halloween Havoc. It was just one of those nights.
“It turned out to be one of the best, most memorable matches of my career. I’m usually pretty critical of my own work especially in the matches that people consider to be classics, but whenever I watch that one, I just think ‘Shit, that was good.’” – Eddie Guerrero, Cheating Death Stealing Life book.
This was one of those moments where time stood still and no one could breath as we watched the match unfold. Eddie made his mark all over the professional wrestling landscape, and this is one of his masterpieces he created with Rey at his side, matching him stroke for stroke.
It’s moments like these that make this day in history really special, and we’re thankful to have gotten to watch this and so much more.
