AEW announced on Twitter that the Human Suplex Machine of old, Taz himself would be appearing on AEW Dynamite for the first show of 2020. Taz previously appeared on commentary for AEW Dark, which is his most common role in wrestling since retiring from in ring competition. While it isn’t confirmed that he will be doing commentary on Dynamite, Taz isn’t able to wrestle anymore and AEW has no plans to use an on screen authority figure at this time. He could work as a manager figure for a younger talent, but no one comes to mind who would work with him as a mentor.
Taz & His Legacy
Taz is mainly known for his time in the cult favorite promotion ECW, where he was one of the most dominant forces in company history, despite his small stature. He would make a splash in WWE where he’d debut in New York to hand Kurt Angle his first loss in company history. Taz would be more known as a commentator in WWE, being one of the voices of Smackdown alongside Michael Cole. He would eventually end up in TNA, where he did commentary and was a member of the Aces & Eights stable. Since then, he has been focusing on his podcast, and making appearances at wrestling shows both big and small.
Where Would He Fit In The AEW Commentary Booth?
The main AEW announce team consists of Excalibur, Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone. Excalibur handles AEW Dark alongside a guest commentator, which have included Taz, Shawn Spears, Joey Janella, Vickie Gurrerero & Chuck Taylor. Tony is seemingly not always available on Dynamite, so maybe we could see a table of Excalibur, Jim Ross & Taz, while Schiavone handles something else on the show.
Regardless of what role Taz will fill on the upcoming episode of Dynamite, it’s always nice to see him pop up. He remains as one of the more underrated commentators from the 2000’s, and his in ring work holds up watching it back, even by modern standards. It would be interesting to see what Taz would have been able to do in the modern wrestling world in the ring, where faster high flying action is the standard.
