It’s Friday Night and that means another episode of WWE SmackDown is on tonight. Below you’ll see the results of the show as they come, plus links to in-depth recaps.
Segment 1: After a Memorial Day tribute, we open with an episode of the Dirt Sheet. Miz and Morrison spend the whole time talking trash on Braun Strowman, then act shocked when Strowman interrupts them. Morrison challenges Strowman on the Miz’s behalf and Strowman vs. Miz is set for the opener.
Segment 2: In the aforementioned opening match, Braun Strowman defeated the Miz in spite of frequent interference from Morrison. Afterwards Morrison challenged Braun to a Handicap match for the Universal Championship at Backlash and Strowman accepted.
Segment 3: In an Intercontinental Championship first round match, AJ Styles takes on Shinsuke Nakamura. During the bout, commentary announces that AJ Styles is now a member of the SmackDown roster once again, thanks to a ‘trade for future consideration’. Styles capped off his return with a victory and advanced to the Semi-Finals.
Segment 4: Continuing the streak of relatively strong matches, NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair took on WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley in a champion vs. champion non-title match. Bayley kept Sasha Banks in the back to try and prove she didn’t need her. In the end, Bayley rolled Charlotte up and held onto the ropes to get the dirty win.
Segment 5: In mixed tag team action, Sonya Deville and Dolph Ziggler took on the team of Mandy Rose and Otis Dozovic. In the end, Sonya got the victory as Dolph held Otis down on the outside.
Segment 6: Backstage Jeff Hardy talks up how near and dear to his heart the Intercontinental Championship is. This week’s ‘controversial’ message from the Forgotten Sons talks up how they struggled to readjust to normal life after returning from overseas and if that makes you uncomfortable, good, it should. Says their blood is on the people’s hands, so now the people’s blood will be on theirs. Jeff Hardy and Sheamus get the vignette treatment, building up the main event as a big one. The two of them squared off in the first round of the WWE Intercontinental Championship tournament. Sheamus dominated the entire match, and really beat the crap out of Jeff Hardy but in the end, a ducked Brogue Kick led to a sunset flip for the victory, with Jeff Hardy advancing to the semi-finals.
