G1 Climax Night 6 saw an interesting B Block against former eight-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and G1 Climax 17, G1 Climax 25, and G1 Climax 28 winner Hiroshi Tanahashi and former two-time IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Juice Robinson.
Coming into the match Juice defeated Yoshi-Hashi during G1 Climax Night 2, and Kenta during G1 Climax Night 4, beginning his campaign at a perfect 2-0. While Tanahashi lost to IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental ‘Double Champion’ and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) Tetsuya Naito and KOPW (presumably King of Pro Wrestling) titleholder Toru Yano.
Tanahashi isn’t used to being in most win G1 Climax situations this early in tournament action, but he needed a win to keep any realistic chance of winning B Block alive.
Juice, however, was at the position where he could make a real claim for possibly being a darkhorse in the tournament by moving to 3-0. The only other singles match between the two was a New Japan Cup 2018 Semi-Final classic that saw Tanahashi defeat Robinson in 29 minutes and 52 seconds.
Juice was up to the task of competing against Tanahashi, who is long known for his ability to use his brain along with his ability to win matches when most wouldn’t.
This was another one of those matches that saw Tanahashi defeat Juice at the 14 minutes and 16 seconds mark with a package to earn his first two points of G1 Climax 30, and Juice his first defeat.
The loss doesn’t hurt Juice, who still can make his case within the block, while Tanahashi was in desperate need of a victory in order to have a slight margin of error as the tournament enters it’s later stages.
Tanahashi will remain a problem for competitors to answer as G1 Climax 30 continues, while Juice could possibly make a run.
