Recently, ROH dojo graduate Brian Johnson signed a new contract with the company, securing his future. He’s as talented as he is loud mouthed, and without his mentor PJ Black to keep him under control, he’s been picking fights left and right. During the Christmas Surprise 10 man tag team match, he essentially challenged everyone in the match.
Depending on the result of his next match, they just might ask him to back up his trash talk in the ring. Somehow, Brian Johnson has gotten a shot at the ROH TV Championship, currently held by Dragon Lee.
The Biggest Match In Brian Johnson’s Career
Johnson is a 14 year pro despite only being 31 years old, but is just reaching the best years of his career. The ROH roster isn’t huge, allowing someone with the in-ring ability and charisma of Johnson to claim some big matches like this one with Dragon Lee. However, there are some questions on how Johnson got this shot.
He hasn’t won a match since 2019, and that was a tag team match with PJ Black. Johnson has never even won a televised singles match in ROH since joining the roster in 2018! He didn’t get this match due to his record, but rather a fan vote on the ROH The Experience Facebook page. After calling the fans of ROH “bozos”, they got him into the biggest match of his career.
Dragon Lee Has Hit His Stride
However, fans might have had an ulterior motive in having Johnson win this poll. Firstly, they might have been testing out just how much booking power The Experience really gives them, and pushed the unworthy Johnson to the top. Secondly, Johnson now needs to face Dragon Lee, a complete mismatch for Johnson. He will come into the match with a size and power advantage, and will have double the experience.
However, Dragon Lee is perhaps the best he’s ever been in his career. There are few men in professional wrestling who hit faster and harder than Lee, just ask Rey Horus how he felt after his attempt to take the ROH TV Championship from Dragon Lee. The only people who have beaten Lee since he became champion are Hiromu Takahashi & PCO, two men who are far above Brian Johnson.
