With the notable exception of Wrestlemania, which was held in Raymond James Stadium, WWE has mainly stayed in the Thunderdome for mostly every show involving the talent from RAW & Smackdown. This is set to change, as WWE is itching to get back on the road.
We already know they plan to hold Wrestlemania outside of Florida in 2022, but Summerslam 2021 might be their first major show on the road. They have their eyes on the World’s Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden.
WWE & Madison Square Garden Have A Rich History
While WWE hasn’t been running MSG as often as they used to in recent years, often opting for the Barclays Center instead; their history within MSG dates all the way back to the days of NWA Capitol Wrestling, with their first show there being all the way back in 1957. This makes it a home arena of WWE, and it’s always a great time when they go there for a major show.
The last time they held a PPV event in the arena was a decade ago however, for Survivor Series 2011. This makes the potential of Summerslam being held there even bigger, as it would be a return to form and a return to a home venue for WWE. NJPW & ROH are currently the last promotions to run a major show out of MSG, with G1 Supercard in April of 2019, something which has never sat well with WWE.
Would It Come With NXT Takeover: New York II, Or Even Takeover: MSG?
With WWE going back on the road for major shows like Summerslam, this could also lead to NXT getting back to their old Takeover format. While we know NXT Takeover: In Your House II is coming next, if WWE goes back to New York for Summerslam? NXT Takeover: New York II might be the first takeover back on the road.
Traditionally, they would run Barclays Center for a Takeover, but we could see NXT Takeover: Madison Square Garden. That would be the biggest stage yet for NXT, and a true defining moment in the history of the Black & Gold brand of WWE.
