Christian Cage & Matt Hardy have known each other for decades now. They’ve clashes in some of the most iconic tag team matches of the fondly remembered attitude era, and all in all have shared 72 televised matches together. However, tonight is just their third one on one clash, and their first since 2003. Hardy is annoyed that Christian wouldn’t join his faction, the Hardy Family Office, and has decided to try and end his career as a result.
Matt Hardy Has The Historic Advantage
Hardy would leave his Hardy Family Office goons in the back for this deeply personal match. Cage is currently undefeated in AEW, but in his entire career he’s never defeated Hardy one on one. They’d lock up in the middle of the ring, and Cage would shove them through the ropes. The lockup remained as they went outside, before Cage went into a side headlock.
Hardy got some gut punches to release the hold before moving Cage into the ring. Cage got an uppercut to the face and sent Hardy to the barricade, before throwing him right into the barricade closer to a ring post. A diving axe handle off the top to the outside dropped Hardy, before taking him into the ring with a reverse DDT.
Cage would hit the 10 downward punches in the corner, alternating the lefts and rights, before Hardy would sucker him into the corner. Hardy had a plan, and it was a draping DDT right onto the ring steps. Cage was knocked silly by this, and Hardy followed up with some elbow strikes and a choke.
Back in the ring, a neckbreaker got a two count, before taking his time setting up a catapult into the middle rope to aim the throat of Cage. Hardy would follow up with a diving elbow drop for a two count. They’d spill to the outside again for some more brawling, with Cage being dropped face first onto the barricade.
Christian Cage Survives The Leech To Get Major Win
The crowd was split between Hardy & Cage due to their incredible legacies, but back in the ring Hardy would get a sleeper hold applied. He’d get Cage down to the mat, but Cage fought free, only to be slammed down. He’d dodge an elbow drop, before getting some ground and looking for The Killswitch.
Cage would block the Twist of Fate and look for a spear, Hardy dodging the first pass, but being rocked the second time around. Hardy kicked out at two, before being hit with a reverse slingshot and frog splash for another near fall. Cage would be caught on the top rope for a big superplex, but he’d survive to get an inside cradle. The Killswitch would be countered, and Hardy snuck in a low blow.
Twist of Fate landed, but Cage managed to kick out and roll outside. Hardy would apply The Leech on the outside, and fish for the countout win, but Cage broke the count at nine. He’d counter the Twist of Fate right into Killswitch for the win.
Many fans didn’t know Hardy could still go this deep into a match, but he looked fantastic here tonight. Christian Cage has been incredibly consistent since his AEW debut, and tonight was another fantastic performance. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)
Following the match, the Hardy Family Office tried to ambush Cage, but Jurassic Express made the save. Is Cage done with Hardy, or will we have a six man tag coming soon? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
