Ever since the ROH Pure Championship was brought back to the company, Johnathan Gresham has been unstoppable. He’s the best pure wrestler in the company by a wide margin, and tonight he will once again seek to prove this. However tonight is a unique challenge, as he faces a fellow member of The Foundation tonight to prove he belongs as their leader. Rhett Titus is no slouch and has been better than ever, and tonight could very well become Pure Champion.
The Foundation Come Out Together For This Fight
They’d come out together as a united force, before standing off in the ring. This was going to be a battle of skill and respect. On commentary was Josh Woods, who is next in line for a shot at Death Before Dishonor. They’d shake hands, and get this one started. Titus got a front facelock, but Gresham was able to roll out. Another lock up in the middle of the ring, with Titus using his height advantage, but Gresham would fight him off.
Both men went into the corner, but no rope breaks were called. Titus would be able to get an armbar on Gresham, who didn’t go for the ropes and instead tried to escape on his own. He would ultimately be successful, and got a leg lock in the middle of the ring on Titus, with Titus using up rope break number one. Another lockup, with Titus being able to corner Gresham before allowing a clean break, with Gresham getting a cheap shot in.
Titus would get frustrated, and be taken down to the mat with a headlock takeover out of the corner. The headlock was maintained even as Titus hit a backdrop, with Gresham holding on and looking for a pinfall while having the hold applied. Titus finally got free and hit a bodyslam after catching Gresham out of the sky. A camel clutch would be applied, with a knee pressed into the back of Greshams back.
Jonathan Gresham Is A Wrestling Machine
Gresham would block a suplex attempt, before taking Titus back down to the mat with a headlock takeover. Titus got free, only to end up right back on the mat before hitting an atomic drop. A huge Belly to Belly suplex followed, with Gresham using his first rope break to get free.
Another headlock from Gresham would force Titus to the ropes, using up his second rope break. Gresham would look for a suplex, before they’d both tumble over the top rope. Back in the ring, they’d trade roll ups for two counts, before Gresham wanted yet another headlock before being countered into a pinfall. They’d roll about the ring, with Gresham finally getting control and winning the match.
One of the weaker matches of Gresham’s reign, with an incredible slow and uneventful start. There was excellent wrestling, but it wasn’t as engaging as other defenses. Match Rating: 2.5/5 (** 1/2)
